Medna Hygiene is a collection of traditional single-fat soaps made from natural, sustainably sourced fats and oils, using the cold process method. The first collection brings together four simple formulas: Just Tallow, Just Coconut Oil, Just Olive Oil and Just Lard.
Each formula is built around one principal fat or oil, allowing its individual characteristics to remain at the heart of the soap. The collection reflects our interest in traditional soapmaking and our belief that effective hygiene does not always require complicated formulations.
The soaps are handmade in small batches and carefully cured to create firm, practical bars for everyday use. They are presented in round and square bars. The round bars weigh around 80g each and come in packs of two, making it easy to try each formula. The square bars are around 100g each, finished with beautiful patterns, and are available in packs of 4, 6 or 8 through our Hygiene collection.
Just Four Simple, Traditional Formulas
Just Tallow
Made with food grade beef tallow, Just Tallow draws from the long tradition of tallow soapmaking. It creates a firm, long-lasting bar designed for practical everyday cleaning, with a simple formulation that reflects our approach to thoughtful and conscious cleaning.
Just Coconut Oil
Just Coconut Oil is a plant-based single-fat soap made with food grade coconut oil. Coconut oil has a long history in soapmaking and is known for producing a generous lather and effective grease-cutting cleaning action. It is also suitable for vegan and vegetarian lifestyles.
Just Olive Oil
Just Olive Oil draws on the long tradition of olive oil soapmaking, particularly throughout the Mediterranean. It keeps the formulation simple and focused around olive oil, with each bar cured for six months to develop its characteristic qualities.
Just Lard
Just Lard brings another traditional soapmaking fat into the collection. Lard has been used for generations in household soapmaking, and this formula brings that traditional approach into a practical, modern and sustainable cleaning bar.
Born in London
Medna Hygiene was born in London, growing from a local business trading in domestic and industrial cleaning products.
The idea came from our growing interest in how the products we use every day affect both our homes and the wider environment. We wanted to explore natural, sustainably sourced fats and oils as the foundation for traditional soaps suitable for cleaning and maintaining hygiene, while being mindful of their impact on our health and the environment.
For us, this is about more than simply replacing one cleaning product with another. It is about becoming more conscious of what we use, how those products are formulated and what happens to them after we use them.
Many commercial soaps and cleaning products contain ingredients such as SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), parabens and synthetic fragrances. These are ingredients we deliberately avoid in our Medna Hygiene formulations, as well as in the products we choose for our own homes.
We believe in keeping our formulations simple and purposeful, carefully selecting each ingredient for a reason and avoiding unnecessary additions. For us, this is part of making more conscious choices about what we use every day.
Instead of artificial fragrance, we work with essential oils and botanical oil infusions when creating customised formulations. This allows us to explore natural aromas while giving us the opportunity to formulate according to the purpose of the soap rather than adding fragrance simply for the sake of scent.
Our passion for plants, botanicals, oils and especially essential oils naturally led us into soapmaking and formulation, giving rise to Medna Soap, our soapmaking department. Here, traditional soapmaking meets our interest in natural ingredients, thoughtful formulation and custom soap development.
Medna Hygiene grew from this foundation, focusing on practical, traditional soaps for everyday cleaning and maintaining hygiene.
Made for Everyday Cleaning
The Medna Hygiene soaps are designed for practical household use. Depending on the formula and the intended surface, they can be used for tasks such as washing dishes, cleaning suitable household surfaces and pre-treating suitable washable fabrics before laundering.
The bars can also be diluted with warm water for certain cleaning applications, giving you another way to use a solid soap rather than purchasing ready-made liquid products that are often largely water.
For those who enjoy making their own cleaning solutions, the soap can be grated and diluted to create a 5 to 10% soap solution for suitable household cleaning applications. If you would like a naturally scented solution, you can add a small amount of a suitable essential oil according to its recommended usage level.
This gives you the freedom to create a simple cleaning solution with the scent you prefer, without relying on a pre-formulated synthetic fragrance.
The intention is simple: one solid bar with multiple practical uses.
And because the collection consists of four different single-fat formulas, you can explore them individually and decide which one suits your household and preferences.
Simple Bases, Your Own Formula
There is another reason we chose to launch Medna Hygiene with these four formulas.
They are not only finished soaps. They are also base formulas for customisation.
You can send us your own ingredients or choose from our base soaps, essential oils, nourishing carrier oils, botanicals and kaolin clays to create a personalised soap for yourself, a special occasion or your business.
This is where our passion for formulation becomes something you can experience yourself. Instead of relying on artificial fragrance, customised batches can be developed using your own blend of essential oils, botanical oil infusions and other carefully selected natural ingredients.
We are also offering soapmaking workshops, and soon will be holding a free soapmaking webinar where we will explore how to make single-fat formulas and customise them with optional essential oils, botanicals, natural colouring and skincare ingredients.
